Conflict and social responsibility: the case of the Apurímac mining companies

Abstract

There are various causes of the social problems that lead to the unacceptability of mining in the Apurímac region, and they are centered on the following: non-compliance with certain company-community agreements, lack of knowledge of mining processes and their impacts, local and regional anti-mining policies, economic satisfaction of small groups, organizational failures of the mining company, hiring personnel from outside the region, and others. The aforementioned causes generate uncertainty in the overall development of communities directly affected by mining projects and the region, leading to unacceptance of mining activities and resulting in social conflicts. Likewise, social conflicts also create uncertainty in the compliance of mining projects at various stages throughout the life of the mine, generating economic losses for the organization. For the sustainable development of the region and the company, it is very important to put shared responsibilities into practice
